If you have ever glanced at my Published Works page at all, or, you know, if you’re an avid steampunk reader… you’ll recognize the Ministry of Peculiar Occurrences. An award-winning series of books by the inimitable Tee Morris and Pip Ballantine, the Ministry is a clandestine government group which investigates and protects the unknown, unexplained, and unusual aspects of the British Empire in the 1890’s. Primarily centered on Agent Wellington Thornhill Books (the archivist of the Ministry) and rowdy colonial Agent Eliza D. Braun (formerly of New Zealand), the stories are adventurous, mysterious, full of deliciously disguised anachronistic Easter eggs, and a great deal of fun all around.
Additionally, in between each novel, the authors produce a podcast anthology called Tales From The Archives, wherein they invite other authors to come play in the sandbox by writing short stories set in the Ministry’s world. I myself am one such author-invitee, having written “A Trick of Strong Imagination” from Tales from the Archives: Volume 2 and “Spiritus Sanctus” from Volume 4.
The series begins with Phoenix Rising and travels across four novels, bringing us to the purpose of today’s post – the fifth installment.
